Note

Our first view of William is as a Baker Journeyman at the age of 22. This was in the 1851 census, where he is also shown as unmarried. He had already met Mary, whom he married in the 7 Sep 1851, and by whom their first child was born later that year.

In the next census, 1861, he was living with his wife and expanding family. His mother in law, Betsy Merrick, was also living with him, and three of his brothers in law - Mary A's brothers.

Mary, his wife, died sometime after the 1871 census, and he met and married Betsy Cross (nee Stanley), by whom he had a further child - who was my grandmother.

There was a falling out with Betsy his second wife, and he is shown living alone as a lodger in the 1891 census, but still working as a baker

Note

Both William and Betsy had been married before, and their spouses had died.
