Note

Although only about 12 years old at the time of the 1861 census, she was not listed at her mother's home. So, she had either died or was then living somewhere else. I searched the complete register of Deaths for the years between the two censuses (1851 and 1861) but found nothing remotely like our Eliza. So, turning again to the 1861 census, I found a girl working as a servant in Clive Street which might be Eliza, though she is shown as aged 13, and born in Winsford. However, her employer is Richard Wharton, a Flat man - who had been born in Northwich.

I then recalled that I had seen Edward recorded in this census on a flat. The Master of the flat was none other than Richard Wharton (actually Horton), so it is very clear that Richard was very pleased to have the younger sister of his 'mate', who was also Cheshire born.

She wasn't so far from her mum at this time. Eliza was in service at 32 Clive Street, her mum lived at 29.
