The first was in South Africa and home. Early in 1913, his term ended and he took a job as a Postman with the Royal Mail. He reenlisted in Oct 1914 and served nearly 5 further years, serving in France and Macedonia. He was demobbed on 11th June 1919, and awarded the daily pension of 20 pence. (old pence - 240 = £1). He was awarded four medals during this time. Photos of his medals can be seen under MEDIA, and copies of his war records also. Quite by chance, the actual medals incribed with his details were offerred for sale by a dealer. I snapped them up and they are now at my home in England. |

| Note | We have a list of five medals that were issued to Frederick W.E. Owen from a catelogue of sale items in a Canadian dealer's website. These include the Queens Service Award with two clasps, Cape Colony and SA01. These are for service in the Boer War, 1898 to 1901. The remainder are for service in the WW1. The Corp is the Army Service Corp. I have found out no further information than that, other than to have a medal card shwing details of the WW1 medals, and which show him as a Corporal, then rising to a Sergeant. There is no discharge data, nor when he enlisted. A visit to the National Archives at Kew may be needed. Clearly, he spent time away from home and from his young family, all of whom were born from 1898 to 1911 When (if) he moved to Australia is still not certain. |
| Note | There is a passenger list of the Jervis Bay leaving London on 26 March 1926 with Frederick Owen, retired of 19 Stafford Street, Liverpool. Whilst all other journeys by his family have shown number 44 Stafford Street as their addresses, this is after they had gone, so it is reasonable that he now lives alone and moved. |
